April 2007 saw the biggest shake-up in consumer protection law for more than 30 years.
That was when the 2006 Consumer Credit Act came into force, providing consumers with better protection from unscrupulous lenders, and replacing the 1974 Consumer Credit Act.
Consumer Minister Ian McCartney described the new Act as “the biggest change in consumer protection for a generation."
The Act introduced an unfair relationships test, which makes it possible for consumers to challenge unfair credit agreements in court. It also extended the services of the Financial Ombudsman Service to provide further assistance for consumers to seek redress.
